Get, Set, Go!!!!

Every Thursday all of Sheridan Syndicate have a session with Fabian from Auckland Sport. He is delivering a programme from Kiwi Sport called Get, Set, Go. It is especially designed for 5 - 7 year olds and works on ball skills (throwing, catching, passing), team games and co-ordination. The sessions will run for 8 weeks of Term 3. Here are some photos from one of our sessions.

Welcome to Term 3

Welcome to Term 3. I hope you all had a great holiday and got to relax and spend time with family and friends. We have an exciting term ahead of us. We have started our Pumanawa rotation on a Tuesday afternoon, which is going really well. Please ask your children what they are doing in their specific activity. On a Thursday we are participating in a sports programme, being run by Kiwi Sport and Auckland Sport. It is called Get, Set, Go and it's all about movement and learning ball skills. The children love it and it's a real highlight of our Thursdays. The speeches are in full swing at the moment and our Sheridan semi-finals are on Thursday of Week 3. Each teacher has chosen a number of children to compete in the semi-finals. A huge congratulations to everyone who presented their speech in front of the class. There were lots of interesting topics and well done for taking the time to write and practise your speech at home. A lot of the children's work is up on display in the classroom. So please come in and visit us and take a look around.

Chocolate Moon Sand

On Monday we made chocolate moon sand for a language experience activity. We made the moon sand, then played with it and made things out of it. We then wrote about the moon sand. We had to describe what it looked like, what it felt like, what it tasted like and what it could do. We came up with lots of wow words to describe the moon sand. Here is the recipe if you want to make it during the holidays:

16 ounces of corn flour
1/3 cup of baking soda
cocoa (as desired)
water
Mix all dry ingredients together in a bowl. Slowly add water until you have a crumbly, yet moldable sand dough. If you add too much water, it will turn into oobleck!!!

Here are some photos.

Term 2 Technology

This term in Room 3 we have been designing and building bridges, as part of our technology topic. Our brief was to build a new bridge for the 3 billy goats gruff, so they could get to the green grass without the troll getting in their way. We talked about the bridge being strong enough, high enough and long enough, to get across the river. The class worked in design teams to construct their bridges.
Here are some photos of the finished products.

Sky Tower Trivia

In week 6 Sheridan Syndicate visited the Auckland Sky Tower. This term we have been studying about structures and how things work. In Room 3 we got into design teams and built new bridges for the 3 billy goats gruff. So they could cross the stream without annoying the troll.
At the Sky Tower we were asked some interesting questions. Can you answer these questions?

Musical Instruments

For the last 2 weeks we have been making musical instruments for homework. The focus was using household materials to create an instrument that could make a sound. On Friday we shared these with the class and talked about how we made it and what sound it could make.
