Topic Study

This term we have been studying weird and wonderful creatures, that are native to New Zealand. We have been focussing on the yellow-eyed penguin, tuatara, weta, giant kauri snail, huhu grub and huhu beetle. Last week we completed a describe map about the tuatara and the children came up with some great ideas and could explain them using lots of interesting vocabulary. Once the map was completed, the children wrote a report about the tuatara. We have included a photo of our map and a few examples of the reports. Please come in and take a look at our topic wall.

Maui and the Giant Fish

In Room 3 we have been retelling Maori legends. Trisha and Otis T. have retold the legend - Maui and the Giant Fish. All our stories are on display in the classroom. Come in and read them!!!

Maui and the Giant Fish
Maui said, "Can I go fishing?" His brothers said, "No". Maui made a flax rope. He went in the net. When his brothers noticed something was inside, he went to shore. He surprised his brothers. His brothers got angry.

Maui and the Giant Fish
Maui wanted to fish. Every time, his brothers said, "No, you are too young". That night he made a plan. He made a fishing line. Then he hid in his brother's waka. When they were too far out, he jumped out of hiding. Next he said, "it's my turn to fish". He hit himself on the nose and it bled. He put the blood on the hook for bait and he caught a giant fish. The fish became the North Island and the waka became the South Island.
