Maths Focus

During our problem solving and Strand days this term for maths, we have been focussing on Volume (Capacity) and Mass (Weight). We have been learning the language: heavy, heavier, light, lighter, most, least, smaller, bigger.
We made paper cones and containers in groups and then tested which container could hold the most beans. We also predicted and tested how many children could squash into a square that was 1 metre by 1 metre. Another activity we did, was using the balance we measured how many blocks it would take to balance Harry the Hippo. We found out that we needed different amounts of a variety of maths equipment.
This week we got into our thinking groups and Mrs McLeod gave us a pile of linking cubes. Our challenge was to work together to create a building using the cubes. Our next activity is to see which buildings are the biggest and can fit the most in them.
We will also be using the same number of cubes to see how many different sized buildings we can make.
Check out the photos from our maths lesson on Volume.
